Back in about May 1990, the news media picked up on a story about the "Goddess of Democracy" , a radio ship which left a French port bound for waters off the Chinese mainland. The £900,000 broadcast ship was supposed to use a high power m.w transmitter to beam specialist programmes towards the Peoples Republic. The 27m long vessel left La Rochelle in France in a blaze of publicity, but without a mast to support a proper m.w antenna!. The station and the ship were named after a statue erected by pro-democracy students in Tiananmem Square. Presumably the Chinese authorities acted swiftly to close the station if it ever made it on the air!.
